Oscar Death Match: Is this the best Best Actress year ever?

Typically in these newsless final weeks of August, bloggers look ahead to Oscar season and bemoan the shortage of plausible Best Actress candidates. Not this year, though! Might 2010 be the greatest-ever year for the category? In the past week, Oscarologists Scott Feinberg and Peter Knegt both surveyed the field and found a glut of strong contenders. Already we’ve seen Oscar-quality performances from Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Tilda Swinton (I Am Love), and Julianne Moore and Annette Bening (in The Kids Are All Right) — and there are plenty more where those came from.

Other likely candidates include: Lesley Manville (Another Year), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine), and Naomi Watts (Fair Game) — all performances that have been seen and raved about at festivals.

But they’ll presumably have heavy competition from Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs), Hilary Swank (Conviction), Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Robin Wright (The Conspirator), Reese Witherspoon (How Do You Know), and Helen Mirren (The Tempest).

And, hey, if any of the above should disappoint, there’s maybe Diane Lane (Secretariat), Jennifer Connelly (What’s Wrong With Virginia?), Bryce Dallas Howard (Hereafter), and Diane Keaton (Morning Glory).

(Compare this to last year, when these were our most likely Best Actress contenders heading into September.)

On the other hand, neither Knegt nor Feinberg were able to identify many surefire candidates for Best Supporting Actress, so if things get too competitive in the lead race, an actress can increase her odds by committing category fraud and slumming it in Supporting (which wasn’t really an option in 2010, since Mo’Nique’s victory was a foregone conclusion). Either way, though, we officially have a death match! This year’s Oscars pretty much have to be more exciting than last year’s, right?

First image of Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder in “The Dilemma”

Today we have the first image (plus a few more details) from Ron Howard’s The Dilemma. Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder star with a script from Allan Loeb (The Switch). The film centers on a man (Vaughn) who learns that the wife of his best friend (James) might be cheating. Howard remarked to USA Today, “There is so much about Vince and Kevin’s relationship that could all unravel — they have a business together, they share a four-way friendship with Kevin’s wife (Ryder) and Vince’s girlfriend (Connelly).”

Among other things, Vaughn promises that James does “some JumboTron dancing” at a Chicago Blackhawks game when The Dilemma opens on January 14, 2011.

“What’s Wrong With Virginia?”, filmed in Holland, to premiere at Toronto Film Festival

What’s Wrong With Virginia? takes another step towards being a prestige picture: It’ll debut in September at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Produced by Holland’s TicTock Studios, the film was shot in Holland last year, and stars Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly and Emma Roberts. It was directed by Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.

The TIFF’s official description of the film states, “Drawing on shades of David Lynch and Todd Haynes (and Douglas Sirk before him), (Black) descends into the world of his characters on their lyrical, sometimes lurid terms. The effect is intoxicating.”

A national release date for the film has not been announced.

First look: Jennifer Connelly & Ed Harris in “What’s Wrong With Virginia?”

After winning the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Gus Van Sant’s Milk, Dustin Lance Black has lined up a number of projects. Already on his busy slate is Clint Eastwood’s biopic Hoover, David Gordon Green’s Barefoot Bandit and an adaptation of the graphic novel 3 Story: The Secret History Of A Giant Man. However the writer has also quietly been working on his directorial debut What’s Wrong With Virginia? based unsurprisingly on his own script.

Virginia centers on the charming but psychologically disturbed titular mother (Connelly) who holds a secret 20-year affair with a sheriff (Ed Harris) now running for state senate. Their relationship is then tested when the mother’s 16-year-old son begins a relationship with the sheriff’s daughter (Emma Roberts). Lucas Grabeel, Carrie Preston, Amy Madigan and Toby Jones also evidently co-star.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Written and directed by Academy Award-winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk), What’s Wrong With Virginia? stars Academy Award-winner Jennifer Connelly as Virginia, a charming, yet mentally ill mother whose greatest love is her protector and illegitimate son, Emmett (Harrison Gilbertson). But her longest love belongs to the local-married-Mormon Sheriff, Richard Tipton (Ed Harris), who is running for public office and might very well be Emmett’s father. This boardwalk town’s well-kept secrets are threatened when Virginia’s son begins a romantic relationship with Tipton’s daughter (Emma Roberts). What’s Wrong With Virginia? is a humorous, heartfelt drama that pokes at the American dream as it charges toward a climactic shoot out that begs the question: can a woman like Virginia ever play the part of mom?

“It’s sort of a moving story of this woman who does have a lot wrong with her, but a lot that’s right about her and her relationship with her son who’s sort of a teen,” Connelly explained earlier this year. “She’s getting to the point where she kind of needs to let him go. It’s very funny because she’s wildly inappropriate. I thought the script was wildly funny, but also really sad.”

Obviously, you can’t tell much from a few images, but it’ll be fascinating to see what kind of director Black is with the talent at hand. The film doesn’t have a release date or distributor yet, but that should change after the film premieres next month at TIFF.

Universal changes title of Ron Howard’s “What You Don’t Know” to “The Dilemma”

After being unofficially named the Untitled Cheating Project and Cheaters, Universal Pictures told HollywoodChicago.com on Thursday that the official name of Ron Howard’s Chicago-filmed picture has changed from What You Don’t Know to The Dilemma.

Universal officially titled the film as What You Don’t Know on another Thursday (July 15, 2010) just two weeks ago. The Dilemma stars Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum, Queen Latifah, Chelcie Ross, Amy Morton, Gary Houston and Connor Del Rio from director Ron Howard and writer Allan Loeb.

Here is the comedy’s official synopsis:

Vince Vaughn and Kevin James headline an all-star comedy from director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer about a man who finds out that what you don’t say to a friend is just as important as what you do. Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum and Queen Latifah join them in The Dilemma: a story of how far you can bend a brotherly bond before it snaps.

Since college, confirmed bachelor Ronny (Vaughn) and happily married Nick (James) have been through thick and thin. Now partners in an auto design firm, the two pals are vying to land a dream project that would launch their company. With Ronny’s girlfriend, Beth (Connelly), and Nick’s wife, Geneva (Ryder), by their sides, they’re unbeatable.

But Ronny’s world is turned upside down when he inadvertently sees Geneva out with another man and makes it his mission to get answers. As the amateur investigation dissolves his world into comic mayhem, he learns that Nick has a few secrets of his own. Now, with the clock ticking and pressure mounting on the biggest presentation of their careers, Ronny must decide what will happen if he reveals the truth to his best friend.

Principal photography for The Dilemma began on May 25, 2010 and runs through Aug. 6, 2010. After filming all around Chicago, the project most recently filmed at the United Center. We have learned that the scenes used up to 900 extras as Chicago Blackhawks fans on a single day. The Dilemma, which will be released on Jan. 14, 2011, will film this Friday in Chicago’s Chinatown.
